Out of the Cold Shelters are now open as November gets underway. Running through to April 15, the emergency shelters provide meals, support for those in need and a warm and sheltered place to sleep. The program has been running for the past 22 years in St. Catharines churches with the support of volunteers. As the need for the shelters increased, the need for more space increased too which put the program at risk until the Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre and the City of St. Catharines created a partnership to help. Mayor Walter Sendzik says the partnership between the City and Folk Arts shows how the members of a compassionate city can work together to solve challenges in the community. Anyone in need of information about the shelters can call 211 or the Out of the Cold call/text line 905-685-5678.
